There are many steps involved in designing a course, and we recommend regularly updating your course to meet the needs of your new students. Below is a self-paced interactive guide, Online Design for All, that provides both direction and resources for designing your online course. You may also view the direction and resources in the Brightspace Online Course Design Guide, as well as visit our Teach Online at URI YouTube channel for a variety of design related tutorials.

URI uses the QM Rubric Standards as guidelines for designing new online courses and as a strategy for improving existing courses. Quality Matters (QM) is a leader in quality assurance for online education. You can review the rubric yourself, ask for a review by a certified reviewer, and/or ask a peer or chair to provide you feedback. ATL staff are also available for consultations about your course design.

Online Course: Peer Observation

Department chairs and peers can use this fillable Online Course Evaluation Rubric to evaluate online courses as they would for an on campus course. The rubric may be used as is or customized to fit your department’s specific needs.
