Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design

Curriculum

You must complete 120 total credits to graduate, with 24 credits in the major, including:

  • TMD 103G: Textiles, Fashion & Sustainability
  • TMD 123: The World of Plastic
  • TMD 126: Intro to Design
  • TMD 203: Textile Science
  • TMD 213: Textile Science Lab
  • TMD 224: Culture, Dress and Appearance
  • TMD 232: Fashion Retailing
  • TMD 240: Development of Contemporary Fashion, TMD 440: Historic Textiles, TMD 441: History of Western Dress, or TMD 426: History & Contemporary Furniture
  • TMD 390: Career Development for the Fashion Industry
  • TMD 433: Textile Markets

TMD majors are required to take 18 credits of professional electives. 9 of the 18 credits must be in one subject matter area. TMD classes cannot be used for professional electives.

Upon completion of the B.S. in Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design, students will be able to:

  • Integrate creative thinking, technical skills, and historical or cultural context to develop original apparel designs or cohesive merchandising lines
  • Investigate the socio-cultural, psychological, and economic factors influencing fashion choices and appearance styles.
  • Assess ecological and ethical challenges in fashion production 
  • Formulate industry practices that promote environmental care and social equity
  • Interpret market data, critique industry practices, and solve complex design or retail problems using critical, creative, and quantitative thinking
  • Demonstrate workplace readiness, including teamwork, leadership, and digital literacy
