Master of Environmental Science and Management

Environmental Planning and Design

The Environmental Planning and Design (EPD) specialization examines the spatial management of human development activities within diverse natural resource systems. This track relies on the use of multidisciplinary approaches to the management and preservation of natural environments; as well as participation in the design of built environments.

Students in the EPD track receive advanced instruction, training, and experiential learning with faculty whose academic backgrounds are in environmental planning, landscape architecture, geography, as well as in various natural and social sciences. This track provides students with the ability to solve a wide range of complex environmental problems by developing specific skills in environmental planning, design, and the natural sciences.  Students can also acquire complementary skillsets from affiliated social sciences such as political science, public administration, psychology, environmental and natural resource economics, and marine affairs.

Graduates specializing in Environmental Planning and Design will be able to pursue innovative careers with federal and state agencies, municipal and city planning departments, private sector consulting companies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
