In the new normal of this fall semester, we make every effort to follow COVID-19 guidelines that will help keep us healthy and safe. So let’s all wear our masks, keep 6 feet apart, wash our hands and avoid large gatherings.
But what do we do when a few people around us do not follow the rules? We’ve heard this question from people in our community who want to keep themselves and others safe, and ensure we all make it to Thanksgiving break together.
We recommend using kindness to encourage COVID compliance.
There are simple things you can do to help others comply:
- Lead by example. Wear a mask properly at all times.
- Assume that everyone is trying to do their best.
- Someone not wearing a mask? Try saying: “Thank you for coming, but I noticed you might have forgotten your mask. Do you have one nearby?”
- Make compliance easy: Know where extra masks are kept if your workplace or classroom has them.
- If needed, get the help of a supervisor.
And here are some no-nos:
- Don’t violate the policies you are enforcing.
- Don’t send anyone away without providing alternative options for service.
- Don’t participate in public shaming.
- Don’t take criticism personally.
