Master of Arts in Education

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Education program is designed for teachers who have already been certified in elementary or secondary education as part of their undergraduate degree, and want to obtain a master’s degree.

Students in the M.A. program generally declare an area of specialization from the list below. As an alternative option, a specialization may also be designed to fit with your specific background and interests.

General Program Requirements

  • 30 credits minimum
  • a required common core of 6 credits (Foundations, Research)
  • electives
  • an academic specialization (18 – 24 credits)

Each specialization area has defined a course in which each student must produce a “substantial paper involving significant independent study.” A written comprehensive exam near the end of the coursework is also required for those students not completing a thesis.
