7.10.11 Members of the General Faculty (see 4.10.11) who retire and have reached the
rank of associate professor or professor, or have earned the title of teaching professor,
and have served the University a minimum of ten years immediately prior to retirement
shall be granted faculty emeritus status. Members of the administration with the title
dean, provost, vice president and president who have served the University ten years in
that capacity immediately prior to retirement shall be granted emeritus status. #20-21-

7.10.12 The University, recognizing the valuable contribution that faculty emeriti are
able to render, shall make every effort to provide an office, secretarial assistance,
working space and equipment to all who desire to continue their scholarly activities.
These privileges shall be accorded on an annual basis by the appropriate academic dean
upon recommendation of the department chairperson, depending upon the availability
of funds and space, and the nature and value of the retired member’s work. #21-22-5Access to Library resources is based on Single Sign On (SSO) credentials, which are established based on your relationship with the University.
Retired faculty without emeritus status will not have received SSO credentials and therefore only have access to the following resources provided through the University Libraries:
- On campus and remote use of the URI Libraries Search to locate print and electronic books, articles, and other items in the Libraries’ collections.
- On campus use of article and research databases, and online periodical subscriptions, provided through the Libraries’ website unless licensing restrictions apply.
- If a Rhode Island resident, a Rhode Island Resident Card which provides:
- URI Libraries Search account access for saving search results.
- Borrowing privileges for up to five books at a time.
Library Resource Access for Faculty Members with Emeritus Status
Once emeritus status is confirmed, overall access permissions are coordinated through Human Resources and the Information Technology Services office. For questions or issues related to access permissions, faculty should consult their department chair and academic dean, who will then notify relevant campus offices.
Faculty members with emeritus status have access to the following resources provided through the University Libraries:
- On campus and remote use of the URI Libraries Search to locate print and electronic books, articles, and other items in the Libraries’ collections.
- On campus and remote use of article and research databases, and online periodical subscriptions, provided through the Libraries’ website unless licensing restrictions apply.
- The same borrowing privileges as continuing faculty, including:
- URI Libraries Search account access for saving search results.
- Interlibrary Loan services.
