Realtime Undersea Modeling and Immersion
Jonathan Fiely (OET) Jason Fahy (URI)
Overview
Part I — This project will make use of and transform data collected through OET’s new Widefield Camera Array (WCA) into 2 new media experiences designed to inspire curiosity in people not reached by our current content on more traditional platforms like YouTube. These virtual reality experiences will be ‘games’ that allow users to explore true-to-life 3d environments captured at our most engaging exploration sites, and form the basis of our push to innovate how OECI, URI and NOAA OER can engage the public with dynamic, cutting-edge & exciting new media.
Part II — This project will create interactive, educational, 3D models of deep-sea environments using data collected during OECI expeditions. The project will process imagery and multibeam sonar data to create virtual environments that can be explored by students and the public. The project will focus on creating experiences that are engaging and informative, and that highlight the importance of ocean exploration.
