The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI), funded by NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) recently signed a purchase contract to acquire a DriX Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) from high-tech company iXblue.

NOAA has selected the University of Rhode Island to host NOAA’s new Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI), in partnership with the University of New Hampshire, the University of Southern Mississippi, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the not-for-profit Ocean Exploration Trust.

When Adam Soule begins work at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography later this month, he will not only become a professor of oceanography, but he will take the reins of one of the largest research initiatives in the University’s history.

The University of Rhode Island will lead a new $94 million consortium to support ocean exploration, responsible resource management, improved scientific understanding of the deep sea and strengthen the nation’s Blue Economy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced today.
