Master of Oceanography (Online)

URI’s online Master in Oceanography (M.O.) is designed for professionals and recent graduates who are looking to advance their education in oceanography while maintaining full or part-time employment. M.O. students have a passion for applying science and technology to real-world oceanographic challenges. Furthering your education from world-renowned oceanographers without having to sacrifice your employment will set you on track to propel your career into management and leadership positions across ocean science work sectors.

Admission Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, engineering, or a similar field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in the United States.
  • Adequate undergraduate preparation in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering or equivalent evidence of an appropriate background for undertaking an advanced degree program, and a minimum of 3.0 GPA (B) in science and mathematics.
  • Personal statement (see details below).
  • Online Interview
  • GRE not required

  • A personal statement discussing: 
    • Your interest in the field of Oceanography
    • Why you chose to apply to this online program at URI
    • How your professional and/or career goals match with the Master of Oceanography degree program
    • Any relevant work experience
  • CV/Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional peers, mentors, colleagues, or former professors attesting to the students ability to complete graduate level course work.
  • College transcripts from all institutions attended.
  • If English is not your native language*, you’ll need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores (taken within the last two years). A minimum score of 91 for TOEFL under the new IBT-Internet Based Test or 575 under the paper-based testing, and a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS is required. The URI Designated Institution Code for TOEFL is 3919.
    *Because students participating in URI Online programs are not required to physically study on campus in the United States, enrollment in a URI online program does not qualify for an F-1 visa.
