Detailed Course Description
The specific objectives for this course are:
- To provide students with an understanding of the basic principles and methodology of epidemiology.
- To familiarize students with the process of public health research (i.e. hypothesis generation, literature review, study design, evaluation, etc.)
- To introduce students to common epidemiological study designs and provide a basic understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and common applications for each of these study designs.
- To familiarize students with sources of bias that may influence the validity of epidemiological research.
- To discuss the application of epidemiological research to areas of public health, health services research, outcomes research and related areas.
Activities/Class format
This class utilizes a combination of lecture and discussion in a small seminar format. Students are expected to read original studies and critique them in class. The class meets once per week. During the first 1-2 hours, new material is presented, followed by discussion of problem sets and readings.
