Health Outcomes Career Paths

Pharm.D. students looking to pursue a Master’s degree in Health Outcomes open up a wide range of career opportunities in the healthcare industry and field of Health Outcomes and Economic Research (HEOR). Check out LinkedIn for all of the career opportunities in HEOR!

HEOR is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on evaluating the value and outcomes of healthcare interventions, which is crucial for healthcare decision-making. Below are some example career paths.

Health Economist: As a health economist, you will analyze the cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions, conduct economic evaluations, and help organizations make informed decisions regarding the allocation of healthcare resources.

Outcomes Researcher: Outcomes researchers investigate the real-world effectiveness of healthcare treatments and interventions. They design and conduct studies to assess patient outcomes, quality of life, and the economic impact of healthcare interventions.

Market Access Specialist: Market access specialists work to ensure that new healthcare products and interventions can be successfully introduced into the market. They deal with pricing strategies, reimbursement issues, and navigating regulatory processes.

Pharmaceutical Industry Roles: Many pharmaceutical companies hire professionals with expertise in HEOR. You can work in various capacities, such as a medical affairs manager, health economics and outcomes research manager, or as a market access specialist.

Consultant: You can work for consulting firms that specialize in healthcare. These firms often provide services to pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, or government agencies in areas such as drug safety and effectiveness, reimbursement strategy, market access, and health economic modeling.

Government and Regulatory Agencies: Government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, may hire HEOR professionals to assess the economic and clinical value of healthcare interventions.

Health Policy Analyst: In this role, you would analyze health policies and their impact on healthcare systems. Your work might involve contributing to policy recommendations and evaluating the economic implications of different policy options.

Academic and Research Positions: Pursuing a career in academia as a researcher or faculty member is an option. You can work in universities, research institutions, or think tanks, where you’ll conduct HEOR studies and contribute to the academic community.

Hospital Administration: Hospitals and healthcare systems may hire HEOR professionals to help optimize the allocation of resources, improve healthcare outcomes, and make informed decisions regarding treatment options and purchasing.

Non-Profit and Patient Advocacy Organizations: These organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of HEOR. You can work in roles focused on advocating for patient access to effective treatments and therapies.

Data Analysis and Informatics: Many HEOR roles involve working with large datasets, so expertise in data analysis and informatics can be valuable. You might work as a data analyst or informatics specialist to extract meaningful insights from healthcare data.

Pharmaceutical Market Research: You would be responsible for gathering and analyzing data to inform pharmaceutical marketing and commercialization strategies.

Global Health: If you have a global perspective, you can work on international health projects or with organizations that focus on global health economics and outcomes research.
