Higgins Welcome Center

Robert J. Higgins ’67

The University of Rhode Island’s newly constructed welcome center is named in memory of Robert J. Higgins ‘67, following a generous gift from his wife, Mary Danielian Higgins ‘67, and her family. During his time at URI, Robert “Bob” Higgins was president of his senior class and a member of the University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. After graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army for two years, including one year of active duty in Vietnam. Following his military service, Bob embarked on what would become a successful three-decade-long career in banking. He retired as president and COO of Fleet Boston Financial in 2001. He passed away in 2016. Bob, who was active in numerous community and civic organizations, was a dedicated alumnus who remained involved with the University, including serving as a URI Foundation trustee and member of the President’s Advisory Council. In 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from his beloved alma mater.
