Exercise Physiology and Pedagogy Applications
January 1 – 15, 2016

This program will introduce students to a variety of sports/physical activities while teaching them to analyze personal physical activity information collected through the use of technological devices. Students will learn specific exercise physiology and pedagogy applications. They will also complete an ocean therapy portion, teaching children with disabilities and wounded warriors how to surf (no experience necessary).


Students will earn 3 URI credits for KIN 391: Independent Study: Exercise Physiology and Pedagogy Applications; Exercise as Medicine/Therapy. Students will be responsible for logging into Sakai routinely in order to access any additional course documents and announcements pertaining to the course. This program is open to students in all disciplines.  

Course work will be supplemented with visits to the Ironman site in Kona, the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Oahu, Volcano National Park, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hanuama Bay for snorkling, hiking Diamond Head, surfing and SUPing at Waikiki. Students will also have access to surf service experience while in Oahu.

Manoa is a diversely vegetated valley and residential neighborhood located only 3 miles east of downtown Honolulu, Hawaii. It also happens to be home to the flagship campus of the greater University of Hawaii system, the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a public co-educational research university and is considered to be one of the best national universities within the US. Being in a tropical climate, Manoa experiences an average temperature of 70°F during the month of January.

Accommodations and Meals:

Students will stay in dorm rooms of single or double-occupancy at the University of Hawaii in Manoa. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Students are responsible for providing their own dinner.
