Faculty-Led Programs

Propose

New program proposals are reviewed on an annual basis and it is best to allow a full year to plan your program.

For new programs, the first step in the proposal process is to attend the orientation for new program directors. Participation in this workshop is required prior to the submission of your proposal. If you are unable to attend any of the workshop dates listed, please email the Office of International Education, oie@uri.edu.

Programs that are approved through the FLP Review process are approved for two years. For example, if a program is approved for 2022, that approval is good for offering programs in 2022 and 2023. Faculty directors will need to re-review all of their proposal documents in the year their program is not under review (eg 2023) to ensure up-to-date and accurate information.

Before you Submit your Proposal

  • Attend the OIE Orientation for New Faculty-Led Program Directors
  • Speak with your department chair and academic dean about your intended program
  • Review the U.S. Department of State Department Travel Advisory for your proposed location.

All materials for the proposal are submitted online through URIAbroad.
Proposals must include: preliminary program itinerary, academic course and curriculum details, emergency contact information, a draft budget and signature approval by the academic dean and department chair.

Proposal Process

Faculty-led program proposals are reviewed by the Faculty-Led Programs Review Committee in early summer for all faculty-led programs. The committee assesses proposals based on the diversity of offerings, application of curriculum to the intended location, and safety and health considerations.
The Office of International Education will inform applicants of the status of their proposal one month after the submission deadline.

Once programs are approved, promotion and recruitment begins through information sessions, online and printed marketing materials and online application.
