URI Admission: Accessibility for Prospective Students
The University of Rhode Island Office of Undergraduate Admission is committed to providing equal access to all applicants in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Campus Visit Accommodations
All of our event registration forms will ask about the need for special accommodations. These notes are reviewed regularly in preparation for the visitor’s arrival to campus.
Accessible
Parking
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended, the University has
accessible parking spaces throughout campus for individuals with disabilities. Parking in these spaces is free with a valid accessible placard issued by any state, and does not require pre-registration or notice.
The closest accessible parking spaces for Admission visitors are located in the Robert J. Higgins Welcome Center parking lot. While there are 12 handicap designated parking spaces, visitors are permitted to park in any parking space in this lot.

Assistance
If you speak a language other than English as your primary language and require interpretation or translation services, including ASL interpretation, please submit requests 2+ weeks in advance. While it may not always be possible to accommodate individuals who miss this deadline, reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate each person. Live closed captioning for the admission information session is also available upon request.
Manual
Wheelchair
Our campus tour is wheelchair and ADA accessible. Wheelchair reservations are available on a first-come, first-served basis by submitting the request on your visit registration form. Wheelchair care and operation are the responsibility of the guest.
Service
Animals
The University of Rhode Island recognizes the ability of persons with documented disabilities to utilize Service Animals, as defined by the Department of Justice-Civil Rights Division, on University property. Visitors do not need to request the University’s permission to bring Service Animals onto University property.
The University may request evidence of the animal’s current state registration and proper vaccination. In addition, an individual may be asked if the animal is needed because of a disability and what work or task the animal has been trained to perform.
Emotional Support Animals and Pets are not considered Service Animals and are not approved accommodations for University visitors.
For more information, please review the University’s Policy for Animals on Campus.
Dietary
Needs
If you’re planning to attend an admission event that includes a meal in one of our dining halls, you will have the opportunity to share any dietary restrictions on your registration form for that event.
For all questions related to dietary accommodations, nutrition, ingredients, or food preparation methods, please contact Karen Orabona, M.Ed, RD, LDN, our Dietitian and Nutrition Specialist at karenorabona@uri.edu or 401.874.4856.
Requests for Accommodations
This interactive process begins when an individual with a disability requests a reasonable accommodation from the Office of Admission. The interactive process, as its name suggests, is a collaborative engagement between the individual requesting a reasonable accommodation (also “Requestor”) and the Office of Admission.
To request a reasonable accommodation to participate in the admission process, an admission event, and/or a campus visit, please contact Steve Ferguson at sferguson@uri.edu or 401.874.9813 with questions. For TTY assistance, contact R.I. Relay Services at 711.
