CyberCorps® Scholarship for Service

The URI Computer Science (CS) Department is offering a CyberCorps Scholarship For Service (SFS) as part of the U.S Government’s CyberCorp program. This is a scholarship that provides:

  • Coverage of all URI tuition and fees for required courses for up to three years, at least one of which is as a graduate student; AND
  • A $25,000 stipend paid through the scholarship for each 9 month undergraduate academic year, or a $34,000/year for each 9 month graduate academic year. Summers are unfunded and students may get additional funding from an organization with which they do an internship; AND
  • Additional funds of up to $6,000 per year to reimburse textbooks and software for classes, and travel/registration to approved job fairs and conferences.

Applications will be reviewed, and scholarship recipients selected, by a committee of faculty and staff in the URI CS Department. The deadline to apply for a CyberCorp Scholarship occurs each spring.

Eligibility

There are two categories of students that are eligible to apply for the CyberCorp scholarship:

1. URI undergraduate CS majors in their Junior year
URI undergraduates will do URI’s Accelerated Bachelor’s Masters (ABM) program in CS/Cybersecurity with scholarship support in their Senior year and Graduate year.

2. Students with a Bachelor’s degree in CS or related field from any institution (including URI)
Incoming graduate students will do URI’s Professional Science Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity (PSM) with two years of graduate support.

Candidates must meet these qualifications:

  • URI Undergraduates applying for the ABM must be CS majors with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA. Graduate student applicants must have a degree in CS or a closely related field, with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents who will be Naturalized by graduation.
  • Applicants must complete their respective program application for either the PSM or ABM programs in the GradCAS system.
  • At the time of the award of the scholarship, applicants must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file at URI. Applicants who have not already done this (most students do it every year), are encouraged to start the FAFSA application process immediately. Note that this is not a needs-based scholarship, but FAFSA is still required.

SFS Degree Commitment

All students must complete URI’s Professional Science Master’s Degree in Cybersecurity (PSM) within the time period of the scholarship.

SFS Service Commitment

A major benefit of this program is that CyberCorp scholars not only complete their PSM in Cybersecurity degree, but they do an internship and work in a U.S Government cybersecurity job. The U.S. government offers some of the best cybersecurity work opportunities in the world. A partial list of qualifying U.S. Government organizations is found on the usa.gov web site. A partial list of cybersecurity positions is found in the NICE Cybersecurity Framework. This is an excellent chance to get introductory professional experience to launch your career.

The work for the U.S. Government upon completion of a PSM degree is required as part of the CyberCorp scholarship. Scholars must apply to approved U.S. government agencies for a cybersecurity position that interests them, be accepted for a job by an agency to which they applied, and work in that job for a time equal to the time for which they received their scholarship (usually two years). For instance, if a scholar were supported for two years with a CyberCorp Scholarship, they would have a two year commitment to work for the U.S. government after graduation. More details on the commitments made by a CyberCorp scholar are provided at the end of the Frequently Asked Questions page.
