Committees

  • English Dept. Graduate Committee includes the Director of Graduate Studies, the Supervisor of Teaching Assistants, two faculty members at large, and one graduate student representative elected from the graduate student body. Please plan to participate in the elections and do communicate with your elected representatives so they may best represent graduate student priorities and concerns. 
  • The Graduate Liaison Committee, composed of three graduate students elected by their peers, also works with the department to address graduate issues, convey information between graduate students and faculty, and help welcome new applicants to the Program.
  • The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is a University-wide academic and social organization. Many of our students have been leaders. It offers some financial support for conference attendance.

Next Generation Ph.D.

Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, URI is studying ways to broaden career opportunities for graduate students in the humanities. Graduate students at URI produce the Careers in the Public Humanities podcast, which explores the range of prospects open to Ph.D.s beyond the tenure track.

Resources

  • The Graduate Student Manual is a detailed compendium of all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for graduate study at URI. Please download a copy for reference; it will answer most questions you have about the Graduate School rules and procedures.
  • The Academic Calendar and Graduate School Calendar of Deadlines: Also found via the Graduate School website, these are issued annually and appear in the URI Catalog and online. As you near completion of your program, there will be important deadlines you need to meet.
  • The University Manual contains all URI academic information, rules and procedures.
  • The Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog of the University of Rhode Island contains information about program requirements, faculty, courses, fees, and other general information. Keep a copy of the catalog from the year you start. If requirements change, you have the option of fulfilling the requirements that were in effect when you began your graduate work.
  • The Department of English Engrad Google Group (listserv for graduate students) features deadline reminders, job postings, calls for papers, and other information. Be sure Ellen Kelley, the Graduate Program Administrator, has your URI email address.
  • Refer to the online support for e-Campus for Students for useful information.
  • Please visit the Graduate Student Blog and consider contributing to the blog, which is run by your graduate student colleagues. The blog showcases the events and achievements of our graduate students, faculty, and program.
  • Professionalization Committee BrightSpace cite: The graduate students in English have created a Professionalization Committee, which keeps a BrightSpace site with useful documents and organizes meetings on topics important to graduate students professional development.
