B.A. in Spanish
Overview
As a genuinely global language, with uniquely local relevance, Spanish will open doors for you around the corner, around the country and around the globe. With 480 million native speakers spread across the Americas, Africa, the Caribbean and Europe, the Spanish language connects you to a diverse range of cultures, identities, and traditions. And you don’t have to travel to visit the country with the world’s third-largest Spanish-speaking population–you already live there! Only Mexico and Spain have more native speakers of Spanish than the United States.
Why Study Spanish at URI?
A Flexible, Personalized, and Interdisciplinary Curriculum
The Spanish program at URI was designed with two key features in mind: flexibility and results. Our program is structured purposefully to facilitate timely completion of dual majors and dual degrees, without sacrificing quality or the achievement of ambitious learning objectives. From pharmacy to philosophy, education to engineering, and from biology to business, we will support you as you pursue your passion for the Spanish language and for Hispanic cultures along with all of your other academic and professional interests. As you progress through different levels of the curriculum, you gain access to courses with a broad range of interdisciplinary connections. Our classes cater to the strengths, interests and goals of both students who have begun learning Spanish in a classroom setting, as well as those who have grown up speaking Spanish at home with their families.
A Diverse Community
Our program is home to a culturally and linguistically diverse community of students and faculty. Our students and faculty represent Hispanic cultures and linguistic variations from across the Spanish-speaking world, including Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, the United States, and Venezuela. That rich diversity of cultural heritage and those unique linguistic backgrounds make each and every one of our classrooms dynamic and exciting spaces for engaging dialogue, meaningful linguistic development, and tremendous intercultural growth.
Transformative Learning Experiences
Our innovative program focuses not only on helping students develop the ability to communicate confidently in Spanish with real people, but also on intercultural competence, cultural literacy, interdisciplinary connections, critical thinking and experiential learning. Through this multifaceted approach, we create the necessary space and opportunities for our students to develop into highly employable professionals in a variety of fields who are passionate and ethical advocates, and who possess keen intellectual curiosity about the world beyond their own immediate surroundings.
