Get Involved
On-Campus
- Volunteer at the URI Free Farmers’ Market in the Fall, complete the Volunteer Form here. You can harvest produce at our on campus farm or hand it out the next day at the Market! Farming is on Wednesdays, Market is on Thursdays during the Fall semester ONLY. Follow @urifreefarmersmarket for more details.
- Join one of URI’s many clubs relating to nutrition and health sciences such as the Pre-PA Club, URI NEDA Chapter, Women in STEM, Public Health Club, Nutrition Club, or UReca!
- Apply for positions working or volunteering with URI EMS, Pre-Health Ambassadors, Master Gardeners, Aphasia Book Club, or Cyber Seniors program.
- Volunteer your time with Rhody Outpost, the on-campus food pantry.
- Join Delta Epsilon Mu, a Pre-Health Professional Society.
- Meet friends and gain new experiences by joining one of URI’s many fraternities or sororities.
- Don’t be afraid to take courses outside of the Nutrition Department. Human Development and Family Studies, Kinesiology, Biological Sciences, Business, and Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems offer courses that may be related to your degree.
Off-Campus
- Gain experience volunteering with food and nutrition-related organizations like the Jonnycake Center, Hope’s Harvest RI, SNAP-Ed, Edesia Nutrition, or other food pantries local to you.
- Volunteer with Rhode Island Food, Fitness, Fun (RIFFF), a collaboration between Primary Care Physicians, URI faculty, and Pediatric Dietitians.
- Explore networking and learning opportunities by becoming a student member of professional societies such as American Society for Nutrition, Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
- Contact local dietitians, in hospitals, long term care, foodservice, or private practice to ask if you can shadow and/or volunteer with them to see what their jobs are like. The AND has a good resource here, as does the RI Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Some local companies such as Evolution Nutrition offer unpaid internships for students to gain experience.
- Become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through American Health Care Association.
- Volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association, Loud for Life and BIG programs, RI Geriatric Education Center, RI free clinic.
Nutrition Experience for Credit
- Follow @urinutrition for up to date offerings!
- Gain experience through NUT 451: Field Experience in Nutrition and Food Sciences with NUT faculty. Receive credit for experiences in community, education, government, health-oriented, and commercial activities related to food and nutrition.
- URI SNAP-Ed has flexible hours for those wishing to gain experience in Nutrition Education.
- Intern with URI Sports Dietitian Kelli Kidd.
- Work in an on-campus nutrition research lab for course credit (NUT 496). Contact a faculty member who is conducting research that interests you.
- Become an undergraduate teaching assistant and gain experiences in team building, application of nutrition knowledge, and mentorship.
- Discover how to properly convey nutrition information to the public through media by joining the NUT Communications Team.
Paid Opportunities
- Work as a diet technician at a hospital, long-term care facility, assisted living, or nursing home. Search local facilities websites or other job search websites (such as indeed.com) for job postings.
- Several companies offer paid internships for students, such as Blount Fine Foods.
