M.S. in Healthcare Management (Online)

Curriculum

URI’s online M.S. in Healthcare Management is a 30-credit program designed to advance your ability to integrate leadership and knowledge of health care systems to enhance the management of patient care and quality in health organizations. Taught in asynchronous online 7-week modules, you may take one or two courses per semester during the fall, spring, and summer, depending on your desired workload and schedule. If you take one course per session, you can finish the program in less than two years. You may enroll during any semester, as there are no prerequisites for any course, except the practicum, which is offered at the end of the degree program.

M.S. in Healthcare Management Courses

Students must choose nine MHM classes between MHM 501 and MHM 510, followed by MHM 515, which is mandatory for all students. MHM 515 must be taken near the end of the program. Amounts to 10 courses total.

MHM501: Healthcare in America

(3 crs.) This course examines the structures, regulations, financing, economics, policies and incentives that shape the US healthcare sector. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM502: Leadership in Healthcare Management

(3 crs.) The course introduces basic principles and theories of leadership, explores the concepts of emotional intelligence, communication, motivation, accountability, interprofessional team building and leadership development. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: graduate students only

MHM503: Financial Management of Healthcare Organizations

(3 crs.) The course introduces students to the basic principles of financial analysis and management reporting, revenue cycle management, resource allocation decisions, and budgeting for healthcare organizations. (Accelerate Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM504: Economics of Healthcare Management

(3 crs.) This course examines the production of health, healthcare, and healthcare markets. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: open to graduate students only.

MHM505: Healthcare Information Systems Management

(3 crs.) The course offers the fundamental knowledge and tools needed to manage information and information resources effectively within a wide variety of healthcare organizations. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM506: Healthcare Operations & Process Improvement

(3 crs.) The course is devoted to the factors that impact the design, improvement and management of Healthcare Operations. This course covers knowledge needed for the Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM507: Healthcare Quality Science

(3 crs.) This course provides a framework, strategies, and practical tactics to help all healthcare professionals to learn, teach, and lead quality and safety improvement effort. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM508: Data Analytics for Healthcare Management

(3 crs.) This course will cover how to best analyze, categorize, and manage data that are encountered in healthcare industry; statistical analysis techniques; value-based purchasing analytics and risk adjustment. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: open to graduate students only.

MHM509: Law and Ethics for Healthcare Management

(3 crs.) The course introduces basic legal principles applicable to the healthcare arena and alerts students to the possible involvement of law in the healthcare professions. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.

MHM510: Strategic Marketing for Healthcare Management

(3 crs.) Introduces marketing fundamentals and applications in healthcare organizations; addresses changing environment and consumer behavior decisions related to value creation, strategy, and innovation. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: Open to graduate students only.


Practicum (3 credits)

MHM515: Practicum for Healthcare Management Professionals

(3 crs.) This course applies concepts learned from earlier courses to an experiential setting; organizational culture, leadership, financial health, information science, quality improvement. (Accelerated Online Program) Pre: open to graduate students only
