Graduate Programs in Pharmaceutical Science

Admission

We offer a competitive yet holistic admissions process. The percentage and number of admitted applicants varies over time, depending on faculty commitments and available funding. However, over the last several years between 10-30% of applicants are admitted to the graduate program. While applicants with GPAs below 3.0 are rarely admitted, exceptions are considered when there is strong evidence of exceptional potential, such as:

  • Hands-on research experience during or after undergraduate studies.
  • Strong letters of recommendation highlighting research ability and dedication.
  • Upward GPA trajectory throughout undergraduate studies.
  • Additional credentials, such as micro-credentials or certificates beyond the undergraduate degree.
  • High GRE scores (90th percentile or above).

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences, chemistry, biological sciences, or a closely related discipline. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, requirements are flexible.

  • Course Deficiencies: Applicants with gaps in their background may need to complete undergraduate courses for no program credit or demonstrate proficiency through a qualifying exam.
  • Research Alignment: Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the College of Pharmacy faculty with research programs aligned with their research interests.

Application Deadlines and Details

  • Deadline: December 15th for admission in the following fall semester. Late applications may be considered but are less likely to receive teaching or research assistantships.
  • GRE Requirements: GRE scores are not required for the PhD program.
  • Language Proficiency: Applicants whose native language is not English must meet URI’s language proficiency standards, as outlined on the Graduate School website.
