All URI employees and students who go on university travel outside of the State of Rhode Island will submit a travel authorization, receive approval, and submit travel expenses online using our travel module.
Travel authorization, booking, and reimbursement is a multi-step process. This overview will provide you with the information you need to get started and we hope that you reach out with questions along the way.
We encourage you to become familiar with the URI Travel Policy and Procedures before planning your travel.
Travel Alert: Potential Air Travel Disruptions Due to Government Shutdown
The ongoing federal government shutdown may significantly impact air travel in the coming days. The Department of Transportation has warned that continued funding lapses could lead to airspace closures and substantial flight delays across the country.
Critical aviation personnel, including air traffic controllers and TSA security officers, are working without pay during the shutdown, which may result in:
-Extended security wait times at airports
-Potential flight delays and cancellations
-Reduced staffing at key facilities
What URI Travelers Should Know:
-Allow extra time for airport check-in and security screening
-Monitor your flight status closely before departing for the airport
-Consider flexible booking options when possible
REAL ID Travel Notification
Starting Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant identification for domestic flights. A REAL ID is a driver’s license or state-issued ID that meets federal standards for security and identification.
What you need to know:
1. REAL ID Identification: Ensure your driver’s license or state ID is REAL ID-compliant. Look for a star in the upper right corner of the card.
2. Alternative Options: If you do not have a REAL ID, you can still travel by using an alternative form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, military ID, or other TSA-approved IDs.
3. Check Your Status: If you’re unsure whether your ID is REAL ID-compliant, check with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for more information on how to obtain one.
4. Plan Ahead: If you need to upgrade your ID, please allow sufficient time to obtain a REAL ID before your travel date.
5. Review REAL ID FAQs: REAL ID FAQs | Homeland Security
For more information, you can visit the TSA website at REAL ID | Homeland Security
