2014 Summer Chess and Tennis Program Available for Signup

We are pleased to offer summer 2014 chess and tennis programs for our local area children in Rhode Island. Proceeds from the program will be donated to the URI Chinese Culture Club and benefit Chinese culture related programs and activities.

About Chess Program

Why Chess? Chess has been played and enjoyed by people around the world for almost two thousand years. We bring chess to Chinese Culture Club because we believe it directly contributesto academic performance. Not only does chess engage students of all learning styles and strengths, but it also promotes problem‐solving and critical thinking skills. Studies show that children who learn chess show rapid improvements in:

  • mathematics,
  • reading,
  • spatial awareness,
  • visualization,
  • focus,
  • social skills and much more.

What We Do – Whether playing for fun or competition, brand‐new to the game or experienced, the URI Chinese Culture Club is a great place to learn and have a great time! We offer:

  1. Instruction for new players –Don’t know how to play chess? Come to the club and learn the game.
  2. Recreational play – Providing a fun environment for kids to come and play chess with each other.
  3. Instruction for experienced players – For the player ready to advance, begin studying tactics and strategies.
  4. Club competition –Have mini‐tournaments and competitions to stimulate interest.
  5. Tournament competition – Competing with other clubs and schools or participating in local tournaments offers a new level of excitement and also provides incentive for advanced instruction.

Coaches – Christopher Gu and Julius Sun. Both Christopher and Julius are students from South Kingstown High School and are talented youth chess players. At age 12, Christopher became the youngest chessmaster and state champion in Rhode Island! Christopher captured the Rhode Island Chess Champion title again in 2013.
