Leslie Ortiz ‘25, explored STEM and visual design at URI after getting hooked on web development in high school. A first-generation Guatemalan-American student, she majored in international computer science, art, and Japanese. Ortiz earned the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the Bridging Project Scholarship, and a Beatrice Demers Foreign Language Fellowship, allowing her to study abroad in Japan and pursue research at Okayama University. She also worked with one of her URI professors to research and address technology challenges unique to marginalized people.
