At University of Rhode Island, we’re preparing the next generation of leaders to shape the future of sports, entertainment, and athlete-centered organizations. Our Leadership in Sports Management Graduate Certificate gives professionals and emerging leaders the strategic, leadership, and communication skills needed to succeed in one of the world’s most dynamic industries. In just 12 credits, students learn how to lead teams, create exceptional fan and participant experiences, navigate the business of sports, and drive organizational performance in collegiate athletics, professional sports, recreation, and related industries. Grounded in real-world application and industry trends, the program helps students strengthen their leadership presence while building expertise in the evolving sports marketplace. Whether you’re advancing your current career, transitioning into the sports industry, or preparing for further graduate study, this certificate helps position you for leadership opportunities in a dynamic industry.
Available on campus in Kingston and fully online beginning Fall 2026.
Curriculum
The Graduate Certificate in Leadership for Sports Management (12 credits) is designed for professionals who are moving into or occupying management roles in sports who seek to develop the strategic leadership, business acumen, and inclusive mindset required to thrive in today’s dynamic sport industry. Through a flexible format where courses are available online, in person, or students can flex between formats, this certificate blends core leadership development with sports-specific business skills.
Students will explore sport as a dynamic venue for social equity, brand-building, revenue generation, and community partnership, while strengthening their capacity to lead diverse teams, shape culture, and drive organizational transformation.
On completion, graduates will be prepared to apply leadership strategies, ethically navigate sport management challenges, and promote inclusive and sustainable sports organizations at the local, national or global level.

Admission Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in any field will be considered for admission.

Your overall GPA will be considered, however, we will also look at your performance in courses most clearly related in subject manner to courses in our program and for students with undergraduate GPA <3.0 we will give more weight to work experience.
