Sailing: New Leaders at the Helm

by Lucas Masiello ’24

KINGSTON, RI – The Rhode Island Sailing Team is excited to welcome Head Coach Matthew Peter to the team. Joining the Rams after a two-year stint as assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, during which Navy won both Coed Fleet and Team Race Nationals, Coach Peter brings elite-level coaching experience to the team. He also runs One United Sailing, a performance training and coaching program that develops podium sailors in the Club 420 fleet. Coach Peter replaces former head coach Moose McClintock, who led the Rhode Island Sailing Team to placing first in the semifinal round of the 2022 Coed Dinghy National Championship.

Joining Coach Peter are new team captains Elizabeth Taylor ’23 and Tyler Miller ’23. As an indispensable member of the women’s team, Eliza brings an incredible amount of skill and leadership to the team. As main trimmer for the offshore team and representative to NEISA TIDE (College Sailing’s inclusivity, diversity and equity task force), Miller brings an incredible level of leadership and organization to the team and was an integral part of the offshore team winning Kennedy Cup.

Strong leadership will prove crucial in the coming months as the Rhode Island Sailing Team moves into its spring season. “Over the fall, our team showed consistent growth with improving regatta results each weekend. Matt’s coaching and guidance contributed to this positive trajectory. He’s been a great addition to the team. We are looking forward to the Spring and hope to carry this momentum with us throughout the team racing season,” said captain Eliza Taylor. With the team race and national championship season quickly approaching, the Rhode Island Sailing Team is ready to continue this year’s momentum to place above its ranking in interconference competition.
