The University of Rhode Island women’s club hockey team hosted Colorado State University at Boss Ice Arena on Saturday, November 22, and Sunday, November 23. The Rams split the weekend series, with both games decided by just one goal. Saturday’s matchup featured an overtime win for URI.
Saturday: Colorado State 2, URI 3
The weekend’s scoring opened with a shorthanded goal from Colorado State’s Brianna Qualley with about 10 minutes left in the first period. Rhode Island responded early in the second period with a goal from Isabella Bonfiglio, assisted by Neve Brierton and Brenna Vitelli. URI’s Jenna Stevens broke the tie with one second remaining in the second period, giving Rhody a 2–1 lead heading into the final intermission.
Qualley scored her second goal of the game for Colorado State on the power play, tying the score. Neither team broke the stalemate before regulation ended, sending the matchup to overtime.
Just 52 seconds into the extra period, Neve Brierton netted the game-winning goal for URI. Goalie Morgan Ainley was the standout of the night, stopping 58 of the 60 shots she faced.
Sunday: Colorado State 5, URI 4
Jenna Stevens opened Sunday’s scoring with her second goal of the weekend, giving URI a 1–0 lead less than a minute into the game. Colorado State responded with two unanswered goals to close out the first period.
The momentum stayed with Colorado State in the second, as Qualley added her third and fourth goals of the weekend. The visiting Rams extended their lead early in the third, making it 5–1.
URI refused to quit. Bonfiglio scored her second goal of the weekend to cut the deficit to three. Rhode Island’s Riley Bain and Jillian Johannes added two more goals, bringing URI within one, but Colorado State held on for the 5–4 victory.
After splitting the weekend series with the visiting Rams, URI moves to 2–7 on the season. The team sits in fifth place in the Women’s Division I Independent Conference. Next, the Rams will travel to face fourth-place UMass Amherst on December 5 and 6.
