OLLI TRIVIA NIGHT- Wednesday, Sept 18, at 6:30PM at Evie’s in Westerly. Join your OLLI friends for TRIVIA NIGHT at Evie’s in Westerly on Wednesday, September 18, at 6:30PM. Come have some fun, meet members and put your knowledge and life experiences to work to help us win! Trivia begins at 6:30, so be there by 6:00PM so we can get our teams together. The last time we played we had two competing tables of OLLI members and we were the first and second place winners! Of course, you can always come earlier if you want to dine first!

CAREWEAR: WEARABLE STUDY– Would you like to take part in a wearable study? In this feasibility study they aim to validate the use of wearable devices such as commercially available smart watches and an in-lab developed chest belt to monitor daily life stress events. VOLUNTEERS needed at the URI Academic Enhancement Drop-In Center on campus at the Carothers Library. Key responsibilities would be to open the Drop-In Center for daily operations, greet students and student staff, stock and organize supplies, and provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere for all. Hours to serve are Monday – Thursday, 11:45 am -2:00 pm. Candidates must have the ability to commit to a consistent schedule. URI HONORS COLLOQUIUM PRESENTS ‘DEMOCRACY IN PERIL’

This year, the 61st annual Honors Colloquium will provide an opportunity for scholars, experts, and the URI community to engage in a thoughtful and informed dialogue on the meaning, importance of, and risks to, democracy. The annual university-wide forum is free and open to the public. Lectures will be held most Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Edwards Hall and will be streamed online. The colloquium kicks off on Sept. 17 with Zack Beauchamp from Vox. Click for more information.

THE PREMIERE OF “OPTICS OF AGING”: CHALLENGING AGEISM THROUGH THE STORIES OF RHODE ISLAND’S OLDER ADULTS– On October 15, 2024, the Providence Public Library will host the premiere of Optics of Aging, a new documentary by filmmaker Michelle Le Brun. This 55-minute film focuses on the lives of five older adults in Rhode Island, highlighting their contributions to the state and exploring the complex realities of aging. The film, which took three years to complete, is supported by The Rhode Island Foundation, The Robertson Foundation, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, and the Providence Public Library.

The film profiles five individuals whose lives and work have had a lasting impact on Rhode Island. By focusing on their personal stories, Le Brun aims to challenge the negative assumptions about aging and offer a more nuanced perspective on what it means to grow older. These individuals, ranging in age from their 70s to their 90s, offer a diverse set of perspectives on aging. Their stories illustrate that aging is not a uniform experience but is instead shaped by personal history, social context, and individual resilience. Through their narratives, Optics of Aging challenges the monolithic view of old age and highlights the ongoing contributions of older adults to society.

FREE PRESENTATION SPONSORED BY A COMMUNITY TOGETHER– How URI Advocates for Older Adults with Phillip G. Clark, Thursday, September 26, at 1:00 p.m.at the South Kingstown Recreation Center, 30 St Dominic Road Wakefield- Free and open to all.

Professor Clark will talk about current research at the University of Rhode Island — its Program in Gerontology and the RIGEC workforce education program. URI is a member of the Age-Friendly University Global Network, whose aim is to shape how we live and work by increasing educational opportunities across our life span to promote positive and healthy aging and enhance our lives through innovative educational programs, research agendas, curriculum development, online education, health and wellness activities, arts and culture programs, and civic engagement Opportunities.

Professor Clark is Professor and Director, Program in Gerontology and the Rhode Island Geriatric Education Center (RIGEC) at the University of Rhode Island.
