RHODY OUTPOST–  Rhody Outpost is URI’s principal basic needs pantry for students experiencing food insecurity. The Outpost provides fresh and non-perishable food and personal care items at no charge to students. Click here to see the updated Spring wish list. High demand items include raisins and other dried fruit, nuts and seeds, crackers, and cookies.Donations can be dropped off in the OLLI office.

GARDEN TOUR: Summer is coming and the gardens are beautiful! On Saturday, June 22, 2024, the Cross’ Mills Public Library will host its biennial garden tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Rain or shine, the gardens await you. Behold colorful flowers as well as native plants. Visit a sustainable garden of trees, herbs, bulbs and perennials watered only by rain. Stroll through an array of magnificent Red Maples, American Chestnut and Harry Lauder’s walking stick near Green Hill Pond. Old horse farms with amazing stone walls have been transformed into perennial beds and rare trees, hummingbirds, bees and dragonflies add to the enchantment. Tickets are $25, ($30 day of tour. THE KINGSTON CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL The Kingston CHamber Music Festival has delivered extraordinary chamber music on the URI campus since 1989. This is their 36th season, and six concerts are scheduled between July 24 and August 4, in Edwards Hall. FROM FIBER TO FABRIC, Thursday, June 20th at 6pm at Cross Mills Library. Historical reenactors “Wedges of Time” demonstrate the process of textile production, from raw materials to finished usable products. Examine an 18th century great wheel, portable looms, and various fibers and tools of the time. Part of the Weaving Community Summer 2024 series.

RI BRAIN HEALTH GUIDE-The Rhode Island Department of Health has released a new publication, “A Guide for People Living with Dementia and Their Caregivers.” The guide was created in collaboration with several area Alzheimer’s and dementia organizations including the Memory and Aging Program. It provides a comprehensive overview of dementia signs and symptoms as well as guidance on living with dementia, tips for caregivers, information about emerging treatments and interventions, and information about lowering the risk for dementia. View and download the guide.

NARRAGANSETT ART FESTIVAL– Don’t miss the 41st Annual Narragansett Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 & 23, from 9:00AM-5:00PM at the Narragansett Towers. Presented by Rotary Club of Wakefield, RI. The art festival will have artists set up in two locations, beside the Towers and on the Gazebo Field. Food vendors onsite. Proceeds front this event support the charitable donations of the Wakefield Rotary Club.

THE RHODE ISLAND OLDER & WISER DRIVER– Friday, June 21, 10AM-11AM at South Kingstown Public Library. A safe driving presentation for mature drivers. Presented by AAA with support from RI DOT. Free and open to adults. No registration required.

This presentation will cover:

  • The major causes of crashes for older drivers
  • Pedestrian & bicycle safety tips
  • Advice for extending safe driving years
  • How to plan driving cessation (and resources for staying mobile!)

NARRAGANSETT LIBRARY author presentation, Wednesday, July 24th at 6:00pm. Author Jamie Brenner’s new book, A Novel Summer, is the quintessential beach read set in Provincetown, Cape Cod. It is the story of a bestselling author who finds love and second chances in the stacks of a quaint beach town bookshop. This event is free to attend, but registration is required.
