CLASS SPOTLIGHTS:

Conversational Italian
8 Sessions with Dora Waters
Mondays, Sept 12, 19, (skip 26) Oct 3 (skip 10) 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14
9:30 AM – 11:00 AM $65

Conversational Italian is a continuation of the beginner class. After a brief review of the present tense, grammar, and vocabulary from the first four chapters of the text, the focus will be on the past and future tenses, commands and additional grammar, vocabulary, and exposure to Italian culture. Students will assemble in small groups to practice Italian on theme-related situations. All of this will be in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

For the first class: Review the first four chapters of the text and listen to the CD that accompanies the text.

Required text: Marcel Danesi, Ph.D.: Learn Italian the Fast and Fun Way with MP3 CD, ed. 4 (Barron’s, 2014, ISBN 978-1- 260-02620-7), available online and at Wakefield Books at a 20% discount.

The Alexander Technique-Part 2
1 Session with Mara Sokolsky
Monday, Sept 12   9:30 AM – 11:00 AM $15

For those who took the introductory workshop in the spring, or who have taken some prior Alexander lessons, we will bring mindfulness and anatomical accuracy to a wider range of activities, such as walking, lifting, and sitting in front of a computer, and go over some of the mental cues you can use to get yourself into a better, more comfortable state.

Film Appreciation: The Art of Watching Movies
6 Sessions with Paul Stein
Mondays, Sept 12, 19 (skip 26) Oct 3 (skip 10) 17, 24, 31
1:30 PM – 4:00 PM $55

“We are used to sitting back in the dark and viewing a film uncritically; indeed, most Hollywood films are constructed to render ‘invisible’ the carefully constructed nature of the medium.” – Michael Goldberg. Watching a film is enhanced by viewing it with an informed awareness of how it works and with an understanding of the elements of the craft of filmmaking. Discover new ways of viewing and deepen your appreciation of movies. You will learn about the fundamentals of film production (directing, acting, editing, cinematography, and more) and how the elements of the production process are brought together to create the emotional and intellectual impact.

For the first class: Read Martin Scorsese: “The Persisting Vision: Reading the Language of Cinema.”

The Poetics of Tidying: Why a Decade of Retirement Isn’t Enough
3 Sessions with Gale Eaton
Mondays, Sept 12, 19, (skip 26) Oct 3 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM $40

Life happens while you’re making plans. Clutter happens while you’re living. And what are you going to do first—organize the debris from your last project, or start your next one? Discussions may draw on self-help books, current events, and our personal experience. For the grand finale, participants will use their own decluttering (or failure to declutter) to create poetry, art, and mental space.

Suggested reading:  Margareta Magnusson: The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning (Scribner)  Oliver Burkeman: Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals (Picador)
