Class Spotlight

The Global Arctic: A Transforming Region
Six sessions beginning Tuesday, October 5, at 10AM
Instructors: Barbara Nicholson & Barbara Findley

Watch the Video Preview by clicking here.
Major geopolitical changes in the Arctic are making that area of great interest to several nations around the world. Melting ice has opened opportunities for newly navigable passages, exploration for resources, and developing tourism. The class will focus on current competition, the transformations of climate change, and strategies for global cooperation in the future. This course is an expansion of a recent Great Decisions meeting, “The Coldest War: Towards a Return to a Great Power Competition in the Arctic.”  This class will enable participants to research in order to know and understand broadly the geography, history, native people, current stakeholders, overlapping claims, the role of the Arctic Council, the cost of security in the region and the benefits of development. Using the School of Oceanography as a resource will enable us to become familiar with the Arctic science study that URI is involved in. Note: A syllabus will be provided to those who register.

Spring Course Proposals are due October 5. Fill out a course proposal form by clicking here.
