ks Wilbur. His new friend Charlotte is everything he doesn’t like—fierce, brutal, scheming, bloodthirsty—but what pig could have a better friend? We’ll look at how four children’s authors have explored the gamble: E.B. White in Charlotte’s Web, Philippa Pearce in Tom’s Midnight Garden, Janet Taylor Lisle in The Art of Keeping Cool, and Padma Venkatraman in The Bridge Home.

John Gordon was an Irish immigrant during a period of great prejudice against the Irish. He was hanged in 1845 for the murder of Cranston industrialist Amasa Sprague. We will explore what led up to the murder of Sprague and the trial and execution of Gordon, and discuss the subsequent collective guilt over this judicial murder, which led to the abolition of the death penalty in the state.
