Class spotlight: Understanding Dental Plaque in Older Adults

Mondays, Nov 29 & Dec 6  9:30-11:00AM   $35
Instructor: Antonio J. Mattero, D.D.S.

Check out the class preview video here: https://youtu.be/d3Mm-UXPh40

Everyone is susceptible to the detrimental effects of dental plaque. The bacteria in plaque are part of the normal oral flora; however, if left unchecked, can create a host of health problems. Dental plaque is connected with sugars and decay, periodontal disease, halitosis and dry mouth, and some systemic diseases. Images of oral disease will be shown as will common supermarket items whose labels will be scrutinized. The presentation will conclude with a pictorial display and discussion describing simple measures, dental devices, and over-the-counter dental products to aid in our controlling dental plaque buildup.

Save the Date: two humanities events on Thursday Nov. 18

On Thursday Nov. 18, the Center for the Humanities is hosting two events that should be of broad interest to the humanities community.

At 12:30 p.m., URI Professor Cathy DeCesare (History) will give a presentation titled “Bermuda Prize” about the controversial voyage of the ship John Jay in 1804-06.  The event, which is part of our monthly brown bag series, will take place in person in the Hardge Forum of the Multicultural Student Services Center and also broadcast on Zoom.  Please click here for registration and more information.

At 7 p.m., Professor Jack Tchen (Clement A. Price Professor of Public History and Humanities at Rutgers University) will give a talk titled, “Before 1776: Time to Break the Silence.”  The virtual event, which is part of our series on “Memorials and Commemoration in the US,” will be live-streamed.  Please click here for registration and more information.

Free Lecture: The American Foreighn Service Association invites you to Diplomats@Work, A Day in the Life of a U.S. Foreign Aid Worker. Continuing their celebration of USAID’s 60th birthday this month, Diplomats@Work will chat with Nancy Ostrowski about the work of USAID and her life as a USAID Foreign Service Officer. From her work in more traditional USAID programs like Moldova to her evacuation from South Sudan, her experiences provide a good representation of the varied work USAID does around the world. There will be opportunities for Q&A. Register by clicking here.

The event is free and open to the public. Questions? Please contact events@afsa.org
