Join the RI Secretary of State Gregg Amore and the Deputy Secretary of State Rob Rock for a fascinating and timely discussion in Securing Your Vote, 1 session on Monday, March 4, from 3:00PM – 4:00PM.  Learn about the election processes that are designed to facilitate citizen participation and the measures in place to ensure that Rhode Island elections are safe and secure.  

Gregg Amore is Rhode Island’s third ranking elected official. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to join Gregg and Rob in a small group discussion about some of the most important issues facing our election officials today.

In the Blink of an Eye – Surviving a Traumatic Brain Injury; 1 session on Wednesday, February 28, from 1:00PM – 2:30PM.  Author and speaker Joan Gardiner will share her experience as a survivor of a traumatic brain injury when she was injured in a car accident in 2001. Joan’s book on the subject was published in 2021, and she continues to speak about the 5 critical factors in her successful recovery.  

Joan Gardiner has a B.A. in economics from Colorado State and a master’s in finance from Bryant University. She gives an annual talk about TBI awareness at Monsignor Clarke School and has talked at three other schools in the past. She was on the board of the Brain Injury Association of RI from 2005 to 2013. Joan lives in South Kingstown, RI with her husband of 32 years, Tom. They have three children.

GOLF FACILITATORS NEEDED– With our growing membership and continued interest in our golf group, we need to add a second group. To do that, we need your help – facilitators are needed to manage a second group. If you would like to help, please contact OLLI@URI.edu or call 401-874-4197. If we do not form another group, a majority of members will be closed out of this group.

OLLI OPEN HOUSE –  Introduce a friend to OLLI on Wednesday, March 6, from 12:30PM-2:30PM and receive a $10.00 OLLI voucher toward future classes. Guests will be able to meet with the coordinators of our Special Interest Groups and hear from a few OLLI instructors offering a 15-minute presentation of their upcoming Spring courses. Refreshments will be served, and the URI Pharmacy students will be providing blood pressure screenings.

WILSON OKELLO TO DELIVER “YEAR OF EDUCATION” DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER ADDRESS, FEB. 29  Wilson Kwamogi Okello, assistant professor of higher education and director of the Black Study Education Lab at The Pennsylvania State University, will be the featured speaker for the University of Rhode Island College of Education’s Distinguished Speaker Series, on Thursday, Feb. 29. The event will take place at 4 p.m. in the Galanti Lounge of the Robert L. Carothers Library & Learning Commons, 15 Lippitt Road, on the Kingston Campus. RHODY OUTPOST–  Click here to view the updated Winter wish list. High demand items include raisins and other dried fruit, nuts and seeds, crackers, and cookies. Rhody Outpost is also looking for a few donations (or loans) of computers for financially challenged students. The library used to have a loan program for students, but it has been eliminated. If you have an old laptop (Chromebook is fine) lying around and would be willing to lend it to a student until the end of the semester or even better, if you can donate it, they would appreciate it. It should be in working condition and have a power cord. Call the office if you have any questions. Donations can be dropped off in the office.

URI THEATRE TO STAGE SHAKESPEARE’S ‘MACBETH’- “Macbeth” runs Feb. 22-24 and Feb. 29-March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 23 and March 3 at 2 p.m. in J Studio at the Fine Arts Center, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston Campus. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $15 for senior citizens and URI students, faculty and staff. Tickets can be purchased online, by calling (401) 874-5843 or at the box office in Room 101H of the Fine Arts Center.
