Curriculum
Graduate Certificate in GIS and Geospatial Technologies (Online)
The certificate is delivered in asynchronous online, seven-week modules that allows for flexibility to fit your schedule, and the four 3-credit courses can be completed in as little as 2 semesters. See below for course listings:
Each course is 3 credits:
EVS 509 Web-based Mapping 1 (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide grounding in the conceptual foundations of GIS while developing competency using web-based GIS tools to explore and communicate spatial information. (required)
NRS 570 Geospatial Data Acquisition and Management (3 credits)
Examine the fundamental structure of primary GIS data formats and management of geographic data including the incorporation of specialized and non-spatial data sources used by geospatial professionals. Focus is placed on database creation, standard workflows for data management and the integration of these data in preparation for geospatial analysis and visualization in ArcGIS Pro (desktop GIS) and ArcGIS Online (cloud GIS).
PREREQUISITES: EVS 509
NRS 571 Techniques in Geospatial Analysis (3 credits)
This course focuses on the application of geospatial analysis techniques to problem-solve and enhance decision-making across disciplines, using geoprocessing tools available in ArcGIS Pro (desktop) and ArcGIS Online (cloud). Specific attention is placed on using data to analyze patterns, proximity analysis and data enrichment.
PREREQUISITES: EVS 509, NRS 570
NRS 572 Advanced Topics in Geospatial Data Visualization (3 credits)
Create clear and informative visualizations using interactive web maps and geospatial web application templates available within ArcGIS Online (cloud GIS). Apply methods and techniques for effective data presentation through interactive web map design, application usability, story map flow and data dashboards.
PREREQUISITES: EVS 509, NRS 570
NRS 573 Emerging Technologies in Geospatial Data Collection (3 credits)
Develop advanced level skills in mobile data collection through field operation applications available in ArcGIS Online (cloud GIS); Collector and Survey123 (mobile GIS apps). Explore emerging techniques to integrate real-time data feeds and imagery using GIS technology to support situational awareness.
