Student Complaint Procedures

While we hope that your time at URI is free of problems, we want to help resolve any issues you may experience as quickly and easily as possible.

All academic issues, including grades, should first be discussed with your instructor, and following that, the Program Director or department chair if needed.

The following University procedures are available to all URI Online students:

For further information regarding student grievance procedures, please refer to the URI Student Handbook.

If you find it difficult to undertake this appeal process, you may want to enlist the services of the Office of the Ombud.

Office of the Ombud

The Ombud’s Office serves as a confidential resource for all members of the URI community. It offers a place for you to receive impartial attention without fearing a loss of privacy. A preliminary talk with an Ombud may result in an alternative course of appeal.

URI is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA). As such, there is a complaint procedure available to you through the state of RI for the following types of complaints.

  • Allegations of state consumer protection violations, including, but not limited to fraud and false advertising;
  • Allegations that state laws or rules addressing the licensure of postsecondary institutions have been violated;
  • Allegations regarding the quality of education or other accreditation requirements.

Please note that grade complaints may not be appealed outside of the institution.
