Transporting /Transferring Animals

Transportation of Animals Between Buildings

If your IACUC Protocol permits, the CBRC animal care staff are responsible for transporting all animals between CBRC facilities. If an investigator needs animals transferred between facilities, the Animal Transport form, available on the Internal Research Resources page, must be completed and submitted to CBRC@etal.uri.edu.

Transportation of Animals within a Building

If your IACUC Protocol permits you to take animals out of a CBRC facility to a laboratory space within the building, the cage lids should remain in place and the entire cage covered with an appropriate covering. The cages MUST be transported via freight elevators if available.

Failure to adhere to the policy above may result in revocation of permission to remove animals from CBRC facilities.

Internal Transfer of Animals

If an investigator wishes to transfer unused animals to another IACUC Protocol, the following steps must be completed:

An Animal Transfer form, available on the Internal Research Resources page, must be completed and submitted to CBRC@etal.uri.edu.

The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) will verify that the investigator receiving the animals has IACUC approval for the species to be used and the procedures to be performed.

The number of transferred animals will be deducted from the number of animals approved for use by the receiving investigator.

The husbandry staff will then change the cage cards and move the animals.

If animals to be transferred have previously undergone surgery or extensive procedures, please contact the Attending Veterinarian to discuss whether transfer of these animals to another project would be appropriate.
