A Vision for Data-Intensive Discovery
Today Big Data permeates nearly every aspect of our society. The ability to extract knowledge from vast amounts of data is now at the core of 21st century discovery and decision-making. To remain relevant and competitive, the University of Rhode Island must position itself at the forefront of this data-driven evolution.
Over the past few years, the Big Data Collaborative has identified over 50 scholars across the URI campuses whose research activities share the common characteristics of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting large amount of data. To generate synergy among Big Data researchers and position URI at the forefront of data-intensive discovery, new computational infrastructure, data experts, and organization are urgently needed. The Provost has selected the Collaborative for Big Data for the next cluster hire initiative. In FY 16 three core positions from the Big Data Cluster Hire along with five URI strategic hires will create eight faculty positions in Big Data. With this major investment of human capital in Big Data, it is essential that we have a clear vision with attention to the infrastructure and organizational elements that are required for sustained success of this effort.
