Big Data Collaborative at the University of Rhode Island

A Vision for Data-Intensive Discovery

Today Big Data permeates nearly every aspect of our world. The ability to extract knowledge from large, complex and rapidly moving data sets is at the core of 21st century discovery and decision-making.  At URI, Big Data and Data Science scholarship includes the development of approaches for which there are not currently viable solutions, and the application of big data to address global challenges in new ways. Our approach to research and education is deeply interdisciplinary or convergent and includes the development of new techniques and technologies for collecting, organizing, cleaning, archiving, accessing, analyzing, and communicating data.

In FY 16 URI hired eight scholars across the academic colleges in Big Data. Today, the Big Data Collaborative has identified over 50 scholars across the institution whose research is data enabled. With this high level of interest and major investment of human capital in Big Data we have created:
·       Data science programs
·       Research Computing Department in ITS (Information Technology Services) and the URI Center for Computational Research
·       Data consulting and training services
