Summer Sailing Lessons

For the 2014 season, we are offering beginner, intermediate, and adult keelboat sailing lessons to the general public. Beginners are taught the basics of sailing from rigging and launching to steering and boat-handling to finally sailing solo. A fleet of 12 ft. Tech dinghies is used for novice sailors. Intermediate sailors use 14 ft. Flying Junior sloops and are taught more advanced boat handling techniques and use of the spinnaker. Sailing lessons for children (ages 10 – 12) and youths (ages 13 – 16) are also available.

Beginners learn the basics of sailing aboard 12ft Tech dinghies. Fundamentals of steering, changing direction by tacking and jibing, reading wind patterns and sail trim are stressed. Safety, nomenclature, knots and rules of the road are also covered.

Intermediate Sailing:

Intermediates sail aboard high performance 14ft Flying Junior sloops and work on advanced boat-handling techniques. Use of the jib and spinnaker are also covered.

Children and Youth

For those sailors interested in competitive sailboat racing, a two-week Racing Class is offered for the 2014 season. The class begins May 12th – 22nd, 2014 (Monday – Thursday – 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.), and takes sailors through an entire race course from starts to mark roundings to finishes. Instruction includes racing rules and tactics as well as boat handling techniques. The course finishes with the Walt Hudson Regatta to determine the class champion. Most class participants go on to race in our summer Friday Night racing series. The cost is $300.00 per sailor.

Two separate classes will be held during the third term from July 21st – July 31st, 2014 and August 4th – 14th, 2014. We use J-24 to teach boat handling, mooring and docking, on-board systems, introductory navigation and man overboard situations. We require intermediate sailing as a prerequisite and no Skippers Card will be issued as the boats are not available for recreational use.

Recreational Sailing

Recreational sailing is available 7 days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekends through October. All recreational sailors must successfully pass an on-the-water “Skipper’s Test” prior to being cleared.  Membership fees for Rec Sailors are $125.00 for URI Students 18 and over, and $150.00 for non-students. There is no additional boat rental fee.
