The University of Rhode Island Club Sports program had a busy weekend with competitions from men’s and women’s hockey, men’s volleyball, and wrestling. 

Men’s Ice Hockey

The Men’s Hockey team faced off against Stony Brook University at home for a doubleheader on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5. Rhode Island looking to secure first place in the ESCHL trails behind Stony Brook in the #2 seat. 

The #22 Ram’s split the weekend against the #7 Seawolves, losing their first game on Friday 7-1. Nick Ferraro scored the lone goal of the game in the final period.

The team returned to the ice for their second matchup versus Stony Brook. URI’s Alex Cudd scored the first and only goal of the game in the second period. 

With a final score of 1-0, it’s the first time in rivalry history that the Ram’s shutout the Seawolves. Starting goaltender Curtis Briggs (14-9-1) stops all 42 shots to pull off the upset.

The Rams remain second in the league and have officially clinched a playoff spot. Their next matchup will be at Lehigh University on Feb. 11 and Feb. 12 with ESCHL playoffs the following weekend. 

Women’s Ice Hockey

The Women’s Hockey team fought hard in their home matchup against the University of Minnesota on Sunday, Feb. 6.   

URI faced fierce competition throughout the game, ending in an overtime shootout. 

 Logan Burns, Abbi Sampson, and Serena Batacchi each with a goal in Friday’s matchup. In such a close game, goaltender Janelle Kelleher took 34 shots on net with 32 saves. 

Penn State would strike back in their next game on Jan. 28 with three goals of their own, winning 3-0.

Men’s Volleyball

Men’s Volleyball had a weekend with their A team winning four straight games over Army (West Point), Brown University, Roger Williams University and rival University of Connecticut. 

The team traveled to RWU for the tournament 

Wrestling

Wresting had two duals this weekend against the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Springfield Technical Community College. 

The Rams dominated UMass with a score of 36-9, winning six of their matchups with three pins.

URI later fell to STCC 48-11, with only one win from Chris Delisle in the 141 weight class. 

The team will attend Henry Marsh Invitational on Feb. 12 and the Brawl on Huntington on Feb. 15.
