Youth Programs

Tadpole Camp, 9am-12pm
Ages: 6 & 7
A camp for the youngest of sailors, filled with sailing basics and age-appropriate outdoor ecology. Throughout the day, campers will engage in hands-on activities and sail on the bay. Prerequisites: Campers should be prepared to do a brief swim check while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).

Learn-to-Sail Camp – Beginners, 9am-3pm
Ages: 8-17
Campers will learn the basics of rigging, points of sail, sailing maneuvers, safety, and recovery in a safe, fun environment. Certified instructors lead a variety of land- and water-based activities designed to promote comfort and independence in the boat. This camp is open to all sailors looking for an introduction to sailing or to brush up on skills learned last year.  Prerequisites: Basic swimming proficiency.

Learn-to-Sail Camp – Intermediate, 9:30am-3:30pm
Ages: 12-17
This camp is a perfect follow-up to the Beginners Camp, or, an ideal choice for young sailors who are already comfortable with the basics. Following a review of nomenclature and basic rigging, safety, and sailing maneuvers, sailors will advance to on-the-water activities that consolidate existing skills and teach new ones during longer sails. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Beginners Camp. Able to right a capsized boat. Able to execute controlled tacks and jibes. Knowledgeable of basic sail trim. Ages 9-12 per Sailing Coordinator approval

Watersports Adventures, 1:00-3:30pm
Ages: 8-17
Each week campers will explore the water from a variety of watercrafts, including kayaks, paddleboards,  and possibly sailboats. Campers enjoy excursions to interesting locations along the waterfront as well as learning some STEM education lessons along the way.

Youth Private Instruction

Adult Programs

Learn to Sail–Beginners
Ages: 18+
Learn the fundamentals of sailing such as steering, sail trim, changing directions by tacking and jibing, reading wind patterns, nomenclature, knots, safety, and rules of the road in this 10-hour course. Beginners will sail the fleet of RS Quest dinghies. No prior sailing experience is needed.

Learn to Sail–Intermediate
Ages: 18+
The intermediate sailing class is for sailors with some sailing experience, especially those who have successfully completed the beginner course. The goal is to improve boat handling and sailing skills, with special emphasis on how the skills learned in the beginner course apply to larger, more powerful boats. Additionally, there is more emphasis on the marine rules of the road so that students can work towards having the skills and knowledge to successfully pass the URI Sailing Center skills check to be able to take a boat out on their own.
