Regulations

All Boat Design and Construction

  1. Boats must be pre-built and can be “fine-tuned” on-site.
  2. Teams will be given equal amounts of corrugated cardboard and 2 rolls of duct tape.  Teams may gather additional materials on their own if they so choose.
  3. Boats must be made ONLY of cardboard and duct tape. NO reinforced cardboard tubes, only broken–down cardboard boxes. No industrial type of cardboard is allowed.
  4. Cardboard cannot be sealed with any paint or sealants. Absolutely NO use of the following items: Paint, Tarbased substances, two-part varnishes, fiberglass resin, epoxy glue, any other two-part substances, or corrugated cardboard that’s bonded to any material.
  5. Duct tape may be of varying colors for creativity but must have come manufactured in said color.
  6. All boats must only be built of corrugated cardboard.  If judges deem it necessary, the boat must pass the “ice pick test” and the metal detector test.  This verifies that the boat is constructed only of cardboard.
  7. Your cardboard may be as thick as you want it to be but must only be cardboard.
  8. The only fastening material you can use is duct tape.  No screws, glue, etc.
  9. There are no restrictions placed on decorative materials as long as they do not aid in the flotation or propulsion of the boat or create a safety hazard.  Everything must be pool safe. (example, no glitter, paper, glue, tinsel, etc)
  10. No motors.
  11. You must build a paddle of cardboard and duct tape to propel your boat.

Construction Suggestions

  • Decide on a design and sketch it out.
  • Do the bottom of the boat first. We suggest two or three layers of cardboard.
  • Cut side pieces of the corrugated cardboard to ensure durability. Use the dull side of a knife when scoring to make a fold. This makes it easier to bend pieces into proper shape.
  • Carefully cover any seams with duct tape.
  • Make sure your paddles are up to the task – they must also be made of cardboard.
