What is EIM-On Campus?
Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a global health initiative founded by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American Medical Association (AMA) in 2007. EIM recognizes physical activity assessment and promotion as integral to the prevention and treatment of chronic conditions and diseases. EIM On Campus (EIM-OC) utilizes the university setting as a microcosm to educate students, faculty, and staff, and create an environment conducive to exercise by:

  1. Making movement a part of the daily campus culture.
  2. Assessing physical activity at every student health visit.
  3. Providing students the tools necessary to strengthen healthy activities that can last a lifetime.
  4. Connecting university health care providers with university health fitness specialists to provide a referral system for exercise prescription.

How does the referral system work?
Flyers containing a QR Code to the EIM Coach Registration Form are posted at Health Services and other areas on campus. Health Care Providers at Health Services and professional staff in additional departments refer students to the EIM Coach if they think they could benefit from increased activity and its various benefits.

Upon receiving your registration form, an EIM Coach will contact you to schedule your first session. These sessions can be done virtually or in-person at a Campus Recreation facility. In your first session, your coach will help you set goals to increase your physical activity and identify strategies and supports to achieve them.

Examples of topics addressed may include discussing resources on campus that align with your activity interests and/or an equipment orientation in Campus Recreation’s fitness facilities. It is suggested that you schedule a follow-up session(s) with your coach for continued success. These sessions are free for URI students and led by Campus Recreation’s nationally certified Personal Trainers.

Do I need a referral to meet with an EIM Coach?
Students do not need a referral to meet with an EIM Coach. Anyone looking to increase their physical activity is encouraged to take advantage of this free service for URI students. Please be sure to accurately note in the registration form how you found out about us (ie. Health Services, Campus Recreation’s website, etc.).

How can an EIM Coach help me?
Our EIM coaches will work with you to set SMART goals. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. An EIM coach will also assess the barriers that are in the way to physical activity so that an individual can find a fun, sustainable way to start or continue their physical activity journey more effectively.
