Commuter Essentials
Make your day at URI work for you.

Start your day prepared.
Check your schedule. Plan your trip. Pack for the day.
→ Get ready
These are things you can do before leaving home that prevent small problems from becoming frustrating ones.
- Check your schedule — Know where your classes are, when they start, and how much time you’ll need to get from one location to another.
- Group your commitments when you can — When scheduling classes, work, meetings, or activities, consider how they fit together with your travel time.
- Check parking or transportation — Know where you’re going to park, when you need to leave, and whether there are any changes to your usual route.
- Consider Carpool Permits with priority parking spaces for students who commute to campus with three (3) or more individuals in their vehicle
The interactive map lets you search for buildings and departments, view parking, and get directions between locations.
TAP oversees campus transportation and parking and provides information about shuttle services and sustainable transportation options.
Take advantage of discounted parking options in nearby satellite lots and Amtrak service.
- Check the weather — Dress and plan for the conditions you’ll encounter between your car, bus stop, and buildings.
- Pack for the whole day — Bring what you’ll need for classes, studying, meals, activities, and any meetings so you don’t have to make an unnecessary trip home.
Locker services are available at the Tootell Complex and Anna Fascitelli Fitness & Wellness Center.
lockers
Check availability and access information for lockers on the first floor of the Memorial Union.
Take a break, study, eat, connect, or recharge in the Commuter Lounge on the third floor of the Memorial Union. The lounge includes comfortable seating, a refrigerator and microwave, and places to charge your devices.

- Know your first stop — Whether it’s class, work, the library, the Commuter Lounge, or another campus location, having a destination makes arriving on campus less stressful.

Make campus more than a place you go to class.
Find your spaces. Eat. Study. Connect. Take a break.
→ Find your places
- Find a place to settle in — Identify a study space, lounge, library, or other place where you can comfortably spend time between classes.
The URI Women’s Center is an empowering space that promotes social justice for every member of the community. Feminine products, a mini-Outpost, a quiet, comfortable space, a microwave and various snacks are available.
Women’s Center- Take care of the basics — Eat, refill your water bottle, charge your devices, and take a break.

Use your time intentionally.
Make the most of gaps between classes and build in time for the things that matter. Your time on campus is valuable. Look for ways to make the most of the days you’re already here.
→ Plan your day
- Give yourself somewhere to go — You don’t need to schedule every gap in your schedule, but having a few places you enjoy being on campus can make the day feel more productive and less like waiting for your next class.
- Use gaps between classes intentionally — A two-hour gap can be an opportunity for a meal, a workout, or a variety of other activities. Study, work on an assignment, visit a professor, meet with an advisor, or take care of something you would otherwise have to do later.
- Stay connected — Say hello to classmates, attend an event, participate in an organization, or spend time with friends.
- Attend events to connect socially.
- Look for lunchtime, evening, or weekend events, socials, or one-off workshops to meet peers that fit your schedule.
- Take part in or watch a URI Theatre performance.
- Visit one of the galleries or see an exhibit.
- Check out one of the farms.
- Explore Religious Life at URI.
- Build in transition time — Give yourself enough time to get between buildings, find parking, eat, and handle the unexpected.
- Know when it’s worth staying — Sometimes staying on campus for an extra hour can make more sense than making another trip home and back.

Set yourself up for tomorrow.
Check what’s next. Gather what you need. Plan your trip home.
→ Get ready for tomorrow
- Check tomorrow’s schedule — Know your first class, location, and start time before you leave.
- Gather what you’ll need — Take home the laptop, books, assignments, chargers, or other materials you’ll need tomorrow.
- Check for anything you need to finish — Look at Brightspace, your calendar, and your email so you aren’t surprised by a deadline the next morning.
- Take care of unfinished business — If you need to print something, charge a device, meet with someone, or pick something up, do it before you leave when possible.
- Plan your trip home — Check transportation, parking, traffic, weather, or other conditions that could affect your trip.
