Scholarship Opportunities
There are a number of ways to make study abroad experiences affordable. For students who study at our partner university, you’ll pay roughly the cost of in-state tuition, fees, room, and board and some corporate hosts even provide housing or a housing stipend.
Computer Science students are excellent candidates for local and national scholarship programs and the Office of National Fellowships & Academic Opportunities helps many of our students identify additional scholarship and fellowship opportunities and apply for scholarship opportunities for foreign study. The office hosts information sessions during the course of the year to help you manage the process, from the planning and application, through the award stages. Office of National FellowshipsURI Faculty-Led Program Scholarships
The Office of International Education has limited funding for student scholarships and provides financial awards ranging from $100-$500. To be considered for the scholarship, please complete all application requirements via URIAbroad by the appropriate deadline. Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications in order to be eligible: 1. Must be a URI student. 2. Have been admitted into a URI Faculty-Led Program or submitted a complete application via URIAbroad. 3. Have not received a scholarship for a previous URI Faculty-Led Program. Application dates for 2019 are: Summer Term: April 5th; Winter J Term: October 12th; Spring Term: November 30th.
OIE scholarshipsBeatrice S. Demers Foreign Language Fellows Program
Awarded to students enrolled at a Rhode Island college or university who wish to pursue foreign language study. Preference is given to applicants from the University of Rhode Island. Students are encouraged to review the criteria and work with their advisor on an application. The program was established by Beatrice S. Demers, a professor of foreign languages at the University of Rhode Island for more than 30 years. Benjamin A. Gilman International Summer Scholarship
The Gilman Program diversifies the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by awarding over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens receiving a Pell Grant. The Gilman Scholarship Program accepts applications two times per year. Students should begin their application one full semester before their study abroad program or internship is scheduled to begin. More information, including dates and timelines. Buick Achievers Scholarship Program
Open to high school seniors and undergraduate students planning to major in an area of Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-related programs and interested in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries. Criteria include academic achievement, financial need, participation and leadership in community and school activities, work experience, and interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industry. Special consideration will be given to the following applicants: first-generation college, female, minority, military veteran or dependent of military personnel. The scholarship awards up to $25,000 per year, renewable for up to four years (or one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program). See the website for more information.
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program (fully-funded)
The CLS Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is a fully-funded overseas language program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and to build relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides study opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning.
The fourteen CLS languages are: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Participants in the CLS Program are not required to have any experience studying critical languages for most of the fourteen languages. Arabic, Chinese, Persian, Russian, and Japanese institutes have language prerequisites, which can be found on the CLS website.
The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, from a wide variety of fields of study, backgrounds and career paths, with the purpose of representing the full diversity of professional, regional, cultural and academic backgrounds in the United States. Participants are selected based on their commitment to language learning and plans to apply their language skills to their future academic or professional pursuits. Deadline: November.
CLS WebsiteDell Scholars Program
$20,000 annually, non-renewable. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Upon the Foundation’s approval, the recipient may also be able to use his/her funds for approved internships and study abroad programs. 300 awards offered annually. Apply online. Application deadline: January 15
The William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund ($500-$2000)
Recognizing the transformative impact of international learning experiences, the William & Sharon Flynn International Study Abroad Opportunity Fund provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students for international study related to their academic area(s) of interest. To qualify for this grant, applicants must be engaged in an intensive language experience that emphasizes in-depth experiential learning and/or scholarly research. This scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with preference given to those students who demonstrate financial need. Applications are typically due in April. ApplyFreeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA)
Created to assist U.S. students with demonstrated financial need and limited prior experience in East and Southeast Asia, Freeman-ASIA will fund approximately 400 students over the next two academic years, with awards ranging from $3,000 per student for summer study and $5,000 per semester, to a maximum of $7,000 for a full year abroad. Students may apply online starting February 1st for awards to study abroad beginning in summer 2016. Prospective students should visit the Freeman-ASIA website (http://www.iie.org/Freeman-ASIA) for eligibility requirements, full application instructions and a list of deadlines. The online application opens on February 4, 2019. Student application deadline: April.
