Health and Physical Education

Core Curriculum Courses (25 credits)
Courses include Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Foundations of Health and Physiology of Exercise

Specialization Requirements (46 credits)
Courses include Introduction to History and Philosophy of Physical Education, Methods in Teaching Physical Education, Motor Development and Adapted Physical Education.

Professional Electives (13 credits)
Select from courses for Health Certification and Adapted Physical Education Endorsement including: Introductory Medical Microbiology, School and Community Health Instruction, General Nutrition, Adapted Aquatics, and Assessment of Special Populations.

General Education Requirements (40 credits)
Courses taken to meet university requirements in the areas of English Communications, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Fine Arts/Literature, Foreign Language/Cultural Competence, Letters, and Mathematics.

Student teaching (15 credits)
To be eligible for student teaching, students must maintain a grade point average of 2.75 overall.

Youth Health and Physical Activity (PA) Studies Track

The Youth Health and PA Studies track focuses on training students to help children develop healthy habits. Students in this track will follow the HPE curriculum with the exception of their internship; they will finish their degree with an internship in a youth fitness setting, e.g. YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Gymnastics Center, or Dance Studio. Students in the track will not need to take and pass the Praxis I exams, Praxis II Licensure Tests to complete the program. A total of 120 credits and 2.0 GPA is required for graduation.
