In 2016-2017, there were more than 80 submissions from eighth graders around Rhode Island, which our 16 finalists were selected.
These students and their families were invited to join us for our 2016-17 Gandhi Essay Award Ceremony on May 2 from 5-7pm in the Swan Hall Auditorium at URI.
At this ceremony we recognized several second and third place essay winners, and announced the overall first place essay winner, Michael Garman, who read his winning essay.

Gandhi Compassion & Selfless Service Award Winners
This award honors students who exemplify the qualities of compassion and service according to Gandhi’s philosophy, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The purpose of the award is to inspire future generations to follow the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose lives exemplified compassion and selfless service as they achieved their goals of peace, freedom, equality, and justice for all.

Awards
All students received a certificate of participation. Multiple winners received cash prizes: 1st – $100, 2nd – $75, 3rd – $50. Participating teachers received a classroom poster.
