The 18 fraternities at the University of Rhode Island make up the Interfraternity Council. Each fraternity is a chapter of a national or international organization. The North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) is the governing body of those organizations. The IFC’s goals are:
- to promote cooperation among fraternities,
- to formulate rules and procedures for recruitment and new member education,
- to regulate interfraternity activities,
- and to insure cooperation between fraternities, other student organizations and the University administration.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. & Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, which governs the 9 historically Black Greek Organizations, also know at the Divine 9.
