Once URI’s Narragansett Marine Lab, the Graduate School of Oceanography has become “a major oceanographic institution”—realizing the vision expressed by founding dean, John Knauss, in 1961. In the 60 years since GSO was chartered under the leadership of then URI President, Francis Horn, countless research projects, hundreds of oceanographic voyages and more than a thousand advanced-degree graduates have issued forth from the Narragansett Bay Campus.
